Information circulating the internet suggests that a PS5 reveal event is just around the corner. Both VentureBeat and Bloomberg say that Sony is planning a PlayStation event for June 3 but this is subject to change. Information circulating the internet last week suggested that an event was planned for June 4, so it is possible we could get an event as early as next week for the new console. Fingers crossed. The sources go on to say that it is possible these dates will change keeping the current pandemic situation in mind.
It is also expected that the console's design and pricing along with the release date will be withheld and we could get this information at a future date. Since both Microsoft and Sony want to price their consoles competitively, both brands are waiting for the other to blink first and reveal the price so the other can undercut it. According to VentureBeat, “Sony also doesn’t need to go too deep on any games it may show on June 3. The company is planning follow-up events. This includes a State of Play that will focus on both next- and current-gen games. That State of Play has a tentative schedule of early August. Again, this could shift drastically depending on a number of factors”.
Sony has taken to its online State of Play to reveal details of two of its biggest upcoming games, Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part 2, so it is possible we can get deep dives into more games through the online State of Play events.
Sony has been drip-feeding us information about the PS5 and apparently the company has had to evolve its promotional plans in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. We got a GDC like reveal for the PS5’s specifications and a simple blog post highlighting the new DualSense controller.
Microsoft, on the other hand, has not only shown us the specifications, but the design of their upcoming Xbox Series X. Microsoft also had a gameplay reveal stream, but that was met with some negative feedback as there was very little gameplay revealed as a part of the stream.
