Qualcomm has unveiled the next-gen chips for wearables called W5 Gen 1 and W5+ Gen 1. The rebranding aside, the new W5 series of chipsets also boasts significant performance and efficiency gains. On paper, the claimed improvements are 2x in performance and power efficiency. Let’s see how else they are an upgrade over the predecessors.

— Snapdragon (@Snapdragon) July 19, 2022 Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 and W5 Plus Gen 1 SoC Specs And FeaturesThe new setup consists of up of 4x Cortex A53 cores plus 1x Cortex M55 efficiency core at 250MHz. This is coupled with LPDDR4 RAM at 2133 MHz and a U55 ML core.
Qualcomm is able to achieve faster performance and power-saving results thanks to a 4nm manufacturing node, 22nm AON co-processor, 30% smaller packaging, ultra-low power Bluetooth 5.3, low power islands for WiFi, GNSS, and audio, as well as low-power states such as Deep Sleep and Hibernate.
The company notes that these chipsets are designed for consumers and enterprises and it has partnered with companies dealing in components like sensors, audio, camera, payments, software, etc.
There are apparently 25 different designs of the new W5 series of wearable platforms for various vendors. Leading brands like Oppo and Mobvoi are onboard. Oppo Watch 3 is set to debut with W5 while one of the Mobvoi’s Ticwatch this fall will feature the first W5+ chip.
