Apples M1 and A14 Chips have an unfixable security flaw, but you need not worry too much about it

New USB-C 240W Power Delivery can support powerful laptops

USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) has announced a new USB-C 240W Power Delivery standard that more than doubles the existing power capacity of standard USB ports. The existing USB PD maxes out at 100W, which is enough for most laptops and phones, but the new standard will be able to cater to more power-hungry machines like gaming laptops, printers, and large monitors.  USB-IF is calling the new standard (v2.1) as Extended Power Range (EPR) and you will understandably need new EPR labeled USB-C cables for your machine to be able to make use of the full 240W power.  “USB-IF will require the cables to bear specific icons so that end-users will be able to confirm visually that the cable supports up to 240W,” USB-IF said in the specification document as noted by CNET. The cables will need to support 5A and 50V to be compliant.  While the universal USB PD standard getting more capable is good news, the requirement of specific cables further complicates things fo...

Xiaomi is formally off the US Department of Defense Blacklist

At the start of this year, nine Chinese companies including Xiaomi were put on the US Department of Defense blacklist for allegedly being controlled by the Chinese military. Well, one of those companies, Xiaomi, is now off the hook. This implies US citizens no longer have any restrictions on buying or holding stocks in the company.  The sanction was one of the decisions taken under the Donald Trump administration against China. The Joe Biden administration has admitted to lack of sufficient reasons to put Xiaomi on the list and has agreed to not challenge the ruling.  Xiaomi had filed a legal complaint challenging its designation as Communist Chinese Military Company (CCMC)  as “unlawful and unconstitutional”. It argued that its CCMC designation would do ‘irreparable harm’ to its business.  Shares of the company fell by over 20 percent since January when it was blacklisted. Its formal removal from the list is likely to turn the tides.  A court fil...

WhatsApp sues Government of India over new internet rules undermining privacy

WhatsApp has filed a legal case against the Government of India in Delhi High court challenging the new internet rules that require messaging services to trace the origin of messages and people credibly accused of wrongdoing. The Facebook-owned messaging platform claims that complying with the new rules will undermine user privacy in the country.  The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 tighten regulations on Digital Media, OTT Players, and Social Media apps. It requires that intermediaries (that host content created and shared by regular people) with more than 5 million active user base will have to enable means to identify first originator of problematic content. This would be in response to a judicial order passed by a court or by a competent authority under section 69 of the IT Act. According to the rules, if the first originator is located outside the country, then the first receiver in India wil...

Carl Peis Twitter hacked by scammers, tried to get people to buy Nothing Coin with ETH

Celebrity account hacks are getting dreadfully common, and the latest personality to take a hit is OnePlus co-founder, Carl Pei. Moving on from OnePlus, Carl Pei founded ‘Nothing’, a consumer tech company that will soon launch its first product, the Ear 1 TWS buds, in June next month.  Today, a fishy tweet posted from his account announced ‘Nothing’ venturing into cryptocurrency space with "Nothing Coin" that is supposedly "built on the ETH ERC-20 chain." Hackers impersonating Pei asked interested followers to participate by transferring their Ethereum Coins to a wallet address.  Pei has also confirmed to Engadget Senior Editor Richar Lei that the tweet was posted after his account was hacked. The tweet that has since been pulled down was likely injected through an IFTTT hack. Which is another reason why users need to be extra vigilant while granting IFTTT permission to third-party apps.  In fact, this isn’t the first request from Carl Pei’s Twitter han...
