Netflix dives headfirst into the anime craze with 40 new shows coming in 2021

Weebs rejoice! It looks like Netflix really wants a piece of the anime pie. The streaming giant has already curated a large number of anime shows and movies but is looking at expanding that roster with even more content. While we already have stalwarts like Castlevania (review), Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell SAC, along with more mainstream shows like My Hero Academia and Attack on Titan, the company is taking a hands-on approach in acquiring more content. A new report on Bloomberg states that Netflix will release 40 new anime titles this year.

A report on Variety also states that Netflix is adapting Record of Ragnarok, the massively successful manga series in Japan. So, it’s clear that Netflix is not only targeting a western audience but actively seeking out a more balanced range of users. The announcements were made at the Tokyo Anime Expo 2021 in Japan. Talk about walking straight into the mouth of the beast! We also reported that Netflix was actively working with Keanu Reeves to adapt his graphic novel series called BRZRKR into a live-action film as well as anime series. Adding to that, Netflix revealed titles such as Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, Yasuke, and many more.

Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness releasing in 2021

Netflix has essentially doubled the number of anime titles on the platform as compared to the previous year. It truly looks like the streaming giant is going all-in on the anime market. With Sony’s acquisition of anime streaming site Crunchyroll for $1.2 billion, it looks like the anime wars have just begun, except this time, it’s two huge corporations facing off against each other. We’re pretty sure there’s a manga of that somewhere out there as well. If you’re an anime fan, you may want to check out our recommendations of the best anime shows on Netflix, right here.
