BSNL returns with Rs 1,999 prepaid plan, offers 250 minutes, 3GB data daily for 365 days

A few days ago, we reported that BSNL had reintroduced the Rs 1,098 prepaid mobile plan in many Indian states with unlimited data and calling minutes. Now we learn from a recently published TelecomTalk report that the well-established state-run telecom operator is bringing back yet another one of its popular prepaid plans. Called the Rs 1,999 prepaid plan, it comes with a validity of 365 days. During this period, the subscriber will enjoy 250 minutes of calling time and 3GB of data daily.

It’s worth noting that the 250 minutes of daily calling minutes on the Rs 1,999 prepaid plan is valid even on calls made to Mumbai and New Delhi numbers, making the plan an even more attractive option for loyal BSNL prepaid patrons. When the Rs 1,999 prepaid plan is active, the user will get to use 3GB of data every day at full speed. However, if they exhaust the data cap within a day’s time, their internet speed will be reduced to 80kbps until the cap is reset again at midnight.

In addition, subscribers of the Rs 1,999 prepaid plan get access to BSNL’s library of PRBT (personalised ring-back tone) with unlimited track changes. They also enjoy a free one-year subscription to SonyLIV’s range of video-on-demand entertainment channels. TelecomTalk points out in its report that there are other recently introduced BSNL prepaid plans as well. For example, users in Chennai can subscribe to the Rs 97 prepaid plan, which offers 250 minutes of calling time and 2GB of data daily for 18 days.

Another TelecomTalk report from earlier in the year says that BSNL recently installed 54,000 towers between 2018 and 2019 to improve its 4G network coverage, “which is more than what BSNL had deployed in the past three years combined”. BSNL’s recently introduced Rs 1,098 prepaid plan comes with unlimited calling and data for 84 days. It also offers 100 free SMS messages per day. You can read more about that plan here.

What if a botched Google search card says you are a serial killer

Many of us have come to heavily rely on Google Search and often don’t question the veracity of information Google cherry-picks from the vast data available on the world wide web for its search cards. This incident, which is one part funny and two parts scary, makes it clear that Google’s Knowlege Graph may not be as sacrosanct as you may have believed.  Hristo Georgiev was informed by a former colleague that a Google search of his name returned a Google Knowlege Graph that depicted his photo and linked it to a Bulgarian rapist and serial killer of the same name, also known as ‘The Sadist’, who murdered five people back in the 1970s and was later executed by shooting.  The graph linked the info to a Wikipedia article, which incidentally had no link to any of Georgiev’s profile or his image. It was Google’s algorithms that erroneously matched the two. What’s even more problematic is that Hristo Georgiev is not a unique name and is shared by hundreds of other people.  As...
