Google is testing Play Pass, a subscription service for apps and games

According to a recent report by Android Police, Google is currently testing a new app- and game-subscription service called Play Pass. This service is akin to Apple Arcade, a monthly app subscription service Apple announced last year. Android Police was able to shed light on Play Pass in its exclusive report after one of its readers sent across a few screenshots of the Google service that’s still in development. From the screenshots shared, we can tell that Play Pass lets a subscriber “explore a curated catalog spanning puzzle games to premium music apps and everything in between”. We still don’t know which all apps and games this service will include although Stardew Valley and Marvel Pinball are seen in the screenshots. “From action hit...

Facebook publishes first results of its brain-typing experiment

Facebook has published details of its brain-computer interface experiments, with some promising results. The system is a brain-reading computer developed by scientists at the University of California, San Francisco backed by Facebook Reality Labs. The paper was published in Nature Communications and details the team's success in reading brain impulses associated with certain words that the test subjects were about to utter. There already exist brain-computer interfaces that people can use to type, but in order to do so, they need to spell out each letter individually on a virtual keyboard. The team at USCF demonstrated that their system could extract the answer to pre-determined questions based on the subject’s thoughts. The experiment was performed on subjects who were on their way to epilepsy surgery and had invasive implants placed in various parts of their brain. Then the system was trained on the 24 pre-determined questions and its possible answers. Once the training was com...

Google researchers find six security bugs worth 5 million in iOS

Two members of Project Zero, Google’s bug-hunting team, have found six bugs in iOS that could have led cyber attackers to compromise devices like iPhones and iPads. The duo published the details and demo proof-of-concept code for five of the six “interactionless” security bugs that made the OS vulnerable to hackers who could have exploited it via the iMessage client. If sold in the exploit market, these six bugs would have reportedly fetched over $5 million. The bugs were discovered by Google Project Zero security researchers Natalie Silvanovich and Samuel Groß. ZDNet reports that all the six security flaws were patched on July 22 when Apple rolled out the iOS 12.4 update. As per Silvanovich, details about one of the "interactionless" vulnerabilities are kept private because the latest iOS update did not completely patch the bug. Silvanovich will be holding a presentation about these vulnerabilities at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas next week. How the bugs c...

Google Pixel 4 confirmed to have Motion Sense, Face Unlock

It seems that Google has taken up the mantle to best the industry leaksters. Earlier, when tipsters were sharing source-based information about the camera of Google's upcoming phone, the company went ahead and posted an image of the camera module. Similarly this time around, when news of Google’s Soli radar chip cropped-up, the tech giant edged forward and announced that the company will use Soli motion-sensing radar, which it has been working on for the last five years. This new technology is expected to enable Motion Sense and Face Unlock functionalities. We have already seen these features in some other phones. Talking about Motion Sense, LG was first to introduce this concept in LG G8 that was launched at MWC this year. It called the feature Air Motion, which allowed users to use gestures to perform tasks like changing songs, increase/decrease volume, etc. When it comes to Face Unlock, it was first introduced by Apple in the iPhone X (Face ID) almost two years ago. Apple admits Siri listens to peoples conversations: Report

After Google and Amazon, Apple has now come under the scanner for eavesdropping on users' conversations. A whistleblower who works for Apple, has told The Guardian on the condition of anonymity that the contractors of the iPhone-maker regularly hear confidential Siri recordings like drug deals and recordings of couples making love, as part of their job in providing quality control, or “grading”.  These contractors grade the responses/recordings on the basis of several factors like “whether the activation of the voice assistant was deliberate or accidental, whether the query was something Siri could be expected to help with and whether Siri’s response was appropriate”. According to the whistleblower, accidental activations were the main reason for the private conversations to be sent to Apple. Apple’s AI-powered virtual assistant Siri is incorporated in several Apple devices, including the Apple HomePod smart speaker and Apple Watch, which are claimed to be the most frequ...

WhatsApp Web could work without phone in future: Reports

WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, is apparently going to get a major upgrade very soon. According to multiple media outlets, WhatsApp could soon have a web version that works without a smartphone. However, all reports point to a single source, WaBetainfo, whose Twitter page and website no longer seem to carry this information. According to multiple media outlets, WhatsApp is working on a way for users to use WhatsApp on their desktop browsers without the need for a smartphone. Right now, web.whatsapp.com allows the use of WhatsApp’s services on a desktop browser, but requires that the user have an account on their smartphone. Additionally, the service currently requires users to log on by scanning a QR code on their phones. The goal, it appears, is to free WhatsApp from the smartphone altogether. It is entirely possible for WhatsApp to be available on browsers without the need for a phone, given that Facebook already has Messenger, which operates the same...

However, visas for all three teams were rejected. While Team Soul managed to successfully apply a second time. TeamIND and Indian Tigers had to play their prelim ma...

But its most recent stunt could make new users frown. According to a recent report by MacRumors, Apple could be shortening the trial period for Apple Music from three months to one month. The company's ad for Apple Music on the Apple Accessories page reads, “50 million songs. Three months on us.” However, MacRumors reports that it recently read a slightly different copy. According to the report, the copy read, “Millions of songs. One month on us.” Do note that, at the time of writing this report, the Apple Music ad on the Apple Accessories page for India still promises three months of free trial and not one. The ad spotted by MacRumors It's hard to explain the anoma...

All 2020 Apple iPhone models could support 5G: Report

If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then all the three iPhones being launched in 2020 will support 5G. The information comes from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo via MacRumors. Kuo had originally said that two of the three iPhones that would be launched in 2020 would support 5G. But he now believes that Apple will offer 5G on all models. This will be done to better compete with lower-cost 5G Android smartphones. Kuo says that after the Intel acquisition, Apple has more resources for developing the 5G iPhone.   Kuo says, “We now believe that all three new 2H20 iPhone models will support 5G for the following reasons. (1) Apple has more resource for developing the 5G iPhone after the acquisition of Intel baseband business. (2) We expect that the prices of 5G Android smartphones will decline to $249-349 USD in 2H20. We believe that 5G Android smartphones, which will be sold at $249-349 USD, will only support Sub-6GHz. But the key is that consumers will thin...

Reliance Jio is now the largest telecom operator in India

In just three years, Reliance Jio has become the largest telecom provider in India. The telecom network’s subscriber base grew to 331.3 million in second quarter of 2019. The top spot came at the expense of Vodafone Idea Ltd., which quickly lost customers, indicating a drop in subscriber base from 334.1 million to 320 million. The company launched by Mukesh Ambani grew at a rapid pace fuelled by $36 million in spending and driving down data tariffs to make internet connectivity more accessible to people. Data tariff in India is now the lowest in the world at $0.6 per GB as compared to the $12.37 per GB in the US. The entry of Jio in 2016 also gave rise to an intense price war between the telecom operators, which also led to a fair amount of consolidation in the market. A handful of operators, including Aircel and Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications, also shut shop while Vodafone India and Idea underwent a merger to stay competitive. Airtel too had to invest in 4G...
